Green Building Intern – Baltimore

New Ecology, Inc. is seeking candidates for the role of Green Building Intern in its Baltimore office. The intern will work full-time to support the Green Building Services team at New Ecology. This is a small cross-functional team that performs a variety of green building technological assistance including sustainable strategy development and certification efforts (e.g. Passive House, LEED, NZE), renewable energy analysis and carbon neutral building assessments, energy audits, does energy simulations for green building programs, analyzes data, and calculates energy savings. This position will provide an excellent introduction and ongoing skill development for building science, sustainable energy, modeling techniques, and analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage a variety of specific tasks with oversight from several project managers;
  • Support sustainability strategy development and certification efforts (e.g. Phius, LEED, EGC, NZE);
  • Assist with renewable energy analysis and carbon neutral building assessments;
  • Support energy audit and data analysis work;
  • Develop strategic and technical recommendations for projects that are thoughtful, creative, practical, and effective;
  • Produce high quality, visually compelling presentations and deliverables to assist with our Climate Smart Homes initiative;
  • Application of existing technical skills to projects in a professional setting and development of additional relevant technical skills;
  • Develop teamwork skills required to create compelling deliverables and engage with clients and project teams;
  • Perform calculations with spreadsheet tools;
  • Develop building geometry from CAD and other types of files for import to modeling tools;
  • Occasionally attend site audits and collect data in the field; and
  • Other projects depending on need and candidate skills (e.g. support development of one code in a high-level language for existing spreadsheet calculations).

Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have or is working on a degree in a Sustainable design related field, such as Architecture, Mechanical Engineering or Urban Planning and will have some experience in building construction activities, performing research, analysis, and reporting;
  • A demonstrated ability to be responsible for projects, to work independently, and to improve the efficiency of methods is expected;
  • Proficiency with 2D and/or 3D drawing/design software such as Revit or Sketchup, as well as MS Excel;
  • Advanced proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools;
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies; and
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Term: 3 months

Schedule: This is a full-time (40 hours per week) three-month internship position. Currently, the Baltimore office is operating on a minimum of two in person office days per week.

Compensation: $18/ hour.

Travel: Though most described work will be done in an office setting or remotely via computer, we would like the intern to accompany our staff on some site audits (typically located in or near Baltimore or Wilmington, DE). Mileage reimbursement is available.
