Assistant Construction Project Manager – Wilmington

Company Description:

New Ecology, Inc. (NEI) is an innovative, nationally-recognized, non-profit corporation with offices in Boston, MA, Baltimore, MD and Wilmington, DE. NEI addresses global environmental issues by bringing the benefits of sustainable development to the community level with a concerted emphasis on equity. We make the built environment more efficient, healthy, and resilient by advancing sustainable practices, ensuring accessible, affordable, and healthy environments in which to live and work.

Our core work is providing energy efficiency and green building services that cost-effectively improve the performance, health, durability, and climate-readiness of the built environment. Our clients are typically owners of multifamily housing, (with an emphasis on affordable housing), and community-based projects such as municipal, educational, and arts buildings. Projects include buildings that are being newly constructed, renovated, or are just seeking improved performance.

Position Overview:

New Ecology, Inc. (NEI) seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Construction Project Manager. This position is part of a growing team in the Mid-Atlantic that provides green building and energy efficiency services for a variety of new construction and retrofit projects.  Our multidisciplinary teams support affordable housing projects that achieve high levels of energy efficiency and building performance, and often certification through ENERGY STAR Homes, DOE’s Zero Energy Ready Homes, or other programs.  During construction, these projects require regular site visits to ensure contractors effectively implement the design intent and to offer formal / informal trainings to help contractors develop their skills with respect to building performance.  This Assistant Construction Project Manager will be NEI’s representative in the field to perform these inspections and provide support to contractors.  This is an ideal opportunity for a building or home performance contractor with a strong interest in building science and who wants to enhance the capabilities of other contractors to build homes that are high performance, healthy and better-adapted to a changing climate.

The Assistant Construction Project Manager will report to New Ecology’s Wilmington office and support projects throughout the Philadelphia metro area and the entire state of Delaware.  The position will work with a diverse team of Project Managers, Energy Engineers, and HERS Raters.  There is significant opportunity for growth in the role and company, including support to pursue a HERS Rater and other energy or green building credentials.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Assistant Construction Project Manager will provide field and technical support to NEI project teams and directly to clients. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Performing site visits and inspections of construction and retrofit projects to confirm adherence to project plans and objectives, provide troubleshooting support, and ensure that problems and issues are identified and resolved;
  • Facilitating meetings with general contractors and subcontractors to review project goals, coordinate roles and responsibilities, and address questions regarding implementation of high-performance construction and retrofit projects;
  • Supporting preparation of site visit reports to document project conditions with narrative and photo description;
  • Reviewing technical documents such as building plans, specifications, and submittals to ensure that green design intent is incorporated and that green and energy efficiency features are buildable;
  • Attending project meetings and contributing toward discussions on relevant building performance issues.

New Ecology seeks to hire multidisciplinary, lifelong learners who naturally seek deeper and deeper understanding of how buildings operate, how finances, regulations and construction techniques affect buildings and residents, and how this understanding can be used to improve buildings.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience in construction or home performance contracting;
  • Basic understanding of building science, energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy systems, and a motivation to continually learn more;
  • Strong interest in improving building performance to reduce energy use and enhance occupant comfort;
  • Strong communication skills, including experience writing reports for clients;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and building and engineering design programs;
  • Ability to: 1) inspect all aspects of buildings, including: accessing basements, attics, and roofs; 2) climb stairs/ladders; and 3) handle and carry equipment up to 40 lbs.;
  • A valid driver’s license;
  • Credentials such as OSHA, BPI Building Analyst / BPI Multifamily Building Analyst, HERS Rater, or Phius+ Rater would be a plus.

Schedule: Full time, exempt, preferred. Regular travel to job sites throughout Delaware and in the Philadelphia metro area with and periodic travel to Massachusetts, Maryland, and Washington, DC. Employees are expected to follow the Company’s hybrid work schedule.
