Work Location: Hybrid—three days remote and two days in-office. *This role requires regular on-site client or field visits, including on days scheduled for remote work. Employees may work from home before or after site visits, depending on scheduling and operational needs.
Role Overview:
New Ecology, Inc. (“NEI”) seeks candidates for the position of Energy Rater at its Boston office. We are seeking a motivated Entry Level HERS Rater to join our energy efficiency team. This position provides comprehensive training and hands-on experience in residential energy auditing and building performance testing. The ideal candidate will work under direct supervision while developing the technical skills necessary to become a certified HERS Rater.
The role will support the Field Services team at NEI while learning, studying, and growing into a certified HERS rater. The Field Services team completes construction inspections, installation verifications, and energy modeling services in support of energy code compliance and high-performance building certification programs including Passive House, ENERGY STAR, Efficient New Homes Program, Indoor AirPlus, LEED, and Enterprise Green Communities with a focus on multifamily housing.
Responsibilities
Field Work and Construction Support
Assist senior raters in conducting on-site home energy inspections and diagnostic testing
Perform visual inspections of building envelope components, insulation, and HVAC systems
Operate blower door equipment, duct leakage testers, and combustion analyzers under supervision
Communicate professionally with homeowners, builders, and contractors during site visits
Documentation & Reporting
Document field observations and measurements accurately using mobile devices and standardized forms
Support data entry and report preparation in Ekotrope energy modeling software
Professional Development
Learn and apply building science principles and RESNET standards
Attend training sessions and work toward HERS Rater certification
Attend training sessions for ENERGY STAR Multifamily Certification
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent
Strong interest in building science, energy efficiency, green building, and sustainability
Attention to detail, ability to follow protocols, and ability to work accurately with measurement tools
Basic understanding of residential construction practices
Physical ability to access attics, crawl spaces, and work on ladders
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Proficiency with smartphones, tablets, and basic computer applications
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Physically able to access crawlspaces, attics, other tight spaces, and climb ladders/ stairs, go on flat roof tops
Physically able to lift equipment such as ladder, and testing equipment
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for field work
Basic computer skills and comfort using technology
Preferred Qualifications
College coursework or degree in engineering, architecture, construction management, environmental science, or a related field
Knowledge of residential construction methods and building codes
Experience or coursework in construction, HVAC, or building science
Rater Field Inspector training and/or BPI Building Analyst certification or working toward certification
Familiarity with energy efficiency programs and green building standards (e.g., ENERGY STAR, LEED, Passive House)

Work Environment
This position is a mix of office-based work and fieldwork. Travel to construction sites in New England (primarily in Massachusetts) is required typically 70% of the time . Occasional travel to our Mid-Atlantic office may be required.
In-office presence is required two days per week.
Fieldwork includes visiting active construction sites in various stages of completion. This requires the ability to navigate uneven terrain, work on roofs, climb ladders and stairs, and work in varied weather conditions.
Must be able to lift and carry diagnostic equipment (up to 50 lbs).
Schedule: Full-time, Exempt (40 hours per week, M-F, 9 am-5 pm)
Compensation: $54,000-$72,000, based on experience and education. The full potential range for this Wilmington, DE–based role is $75,000–$125,000, with typical hires within the lower half and strong potential for performance-based growth.
