In reclaiming and reoccupying lands laid waste by human improvidence or malice… the task is to become a co-worker with nature in the reconstruction of the damaged fabric. George Perkins Marsh

NEI seeks to become a catalyst for sustainable development in cities. We accomplish this mission by promoting best practice and information exchange among three constituencies - CDCs, private developers, and universities - as well as public policy networks. By sustainable development, we mean development that restores environmental quality and eliminates pollution and waste, provides direct, meaningful economic opportunities for all communities, and builds civic capacity to ensure a healthy future. We focus on places most in need of physical and economic revitalization, where residents have been disenfranchised by and alienated from the development system. Emphasizing collaboration and knowledge sharing among our targeted constituencies, NEI promotes development solutions that deliver positive economic, environmental, and social returns (the "Triple Bottom Line").

CHANGING THE URBAN DEVELOPMENT SYSTEM

NEI is a unique environmental organization in that it promotes development in select projects rather than fighting it. NEI supports community groups who are working to improve the livability of their neighborhoods, create jobs, and clean up blighted properties with a particular focus on environmentally responsible redevelopment. NEI provides project management, technical assistance and training, advocacy, and access to critical resources to help communities reach their goals and transform their vision of a healthier, more livable future into reality.

We deliver our program through three primary service areas: Information -- Creating and disseminating a clear vision and storehouse of best practice in sustainable development, educating and training sustainable development leaders, and facilitating sustainable development learning networks; Innovation -- Engaging directly in and championing innovative projects that offer valuable insights and build NEI's intellectual capital regarding best practice in sustainable development; Involvement -- Convening people and institutions to share insights and strategies and linking them to resources that can assist them with sustainable development projects.
